about

This project is free. But you can also pay as much as you'd like for it. Don't pay if you can't. If you can, please do. Whether that's 1 dollar or 1000 dollars. 😊

The "Notes" projects exist in a liminal state somewhere between a conventional album release and a mixtape. They're meant to be free from the restrictions of albums where the listener needs to be taken from point A to B in a cohesive way. But they're also not flippantly thrown together as a hodgepodge assembly of songs with no unifying theme like many modern rap mixtapes are.
There is a unifying and underlying theme to the "Notes" universe. My mantra for these projects is, "If you think it, say it. If you say it, record it. If you record it, share it."
These songs are quite literally notes made in my head (and sometimes in my Notes app). Anytime I'm driving, I craft 8 to 16 bars at a time. When you hear tonal shifts in the content, flow, cadence, attitude...its because I got out of my car. Maybe I was on a post covid Postmates or Instacart delivery. Maybe I was arriving at the gym, or heading to a show, or visiting my family, or getting gas. Every time the car stops, so does my train of thought. And when I start the engine back up, I have new thoughts and new observations to share.
Its stream of consciousness but with an unexpected timer. Maybe a phone call interrupts what I was crafting. Oh well. That was meant to happen so that I could chase another idea down instead.
Being free of the pressure to "write a single" or make something mass appealing, Or to make something sonically epic with musical twists and turns every 8 bars, that's a gift. Just to make the lyrics the genuine forefront of everything. 4 minute verses, no hooks. Sparse instrumentals that bang. Just stripping down the experience so that you can feel my life ricocheting around every 20 seconds.
These songs aren't a snapshot of where I am or where I was. They're the circuits you see when you rip the panels off. It's all just moving back and forth all the time. These songs are as likely to be written by me again as they were unlikely to have ever been written at all. Feedback loops, glitches, and updates. All the time.
These weird little science experiments are infinitely rewarding. But only because they're conducted on their own terms. I have very little say in what ultimately gets created. I'm just a servant to the format-less format. And I'm so incredibly happy you decided to give it some of your valuable time. I hope something cool happens as you listen. Whatever that may be.
And one last thing. At the end of the day, it ain't that serious. If the only thing you take away from it was that I said a lot of words quickly over a beat, I'll take that too.
